Chapter 14: Fever Dreams

Frella

“STUBBORN, BULL-HEADED FOOL,” Aristede murmured—almost too low to be heard. In a more normal tone, he continued, “The soporific will be wearing off by now. I don’t really want to give him more of it yet. The water we just brought back is still cold. Let’s get some damp cloths on his forehead, neck and chest. See if that brings his temperature down a bit while the willowbark does its work.”

It was cowardly of me, but I wanted to escape the sight of Rayth’s distress. I shifted on my feet, looking between Aristede and Eldris. “Do you need my help with him? Only, I thought I might grab someone this afternoon and get to work on those corral panels for the stallion. He must be pretty miserable, tied to a tree day and night.”

Eldris shot me a tight smile. “Good idea, sweet thing. Yeah, we’re okay here. Why don’t you take Nyx with you to help?”

I nodded. “Sounds good. You all right with that, Nyx?”

“Yeah, sure thing,” he said. “Lisha can come along with us and stretch her legs. It’ll be good for her.”

Relieved by the excuse to get away from the results of my handiwork on Rayth’s arm, I rummaged in the corner of the cavern for the axe that we used to chop firewood.

“C’mon, then,” I said, trying to make it look like I wasn’t fleeing the cave in haste.

With more foresight than I’d shown, Nyx picked up one of the waterskins and slung it over his shoulder so we’d have something to drink while completing the heavy work. The three of us—human and dragon—left and headed toward the nearest section of the tree line, with Lisha moving more easily on her stiff hind leg than she had the day before.

“You’re upset about Rayth,” Nyx observed after we’d gained some distance from the cave.

“I don’t regret hurting him,” I said quickly. “He could have killed you with that crossbow bolt.”

Nyx stopped me with a touch on my shoulder, surprising me. I looked up into his green-ringed eyes, so intense and changeable—lit from within by his dragon-bond. My lips parted slightly.

“I know,” he said. “And I haven’t really thanked you yet for stopping him. So…thank you.”

To my utter shock, he leaned forward and pressed a soft kiss to my lips. The brush of skin against skin was just a hairsbreadth shy of chaste. It was also one of the sweetest things I’d ever tasted. I was still gaping at him like a lack-wit when he pulled back, blushing.

“You’re welcome,” I managed after an awkward pause, clasping my fingers into loose fists at my side to keep from grabbing him by the shirtfront and pulling his lips back to mine as I itched to do.

He swallowed, his tongue darting out as though chasing my taste. Color tinged his high cheekbones, and he looked down, breaking eye contact.

“Try not to worry,” he said to the ground, still blushing. “I think he’s actually impossible to kill by conventional means.”

I blew out a breath.
